This worked for me, I'm using an third party nintendo switch pro controller(wired).Then open (Do not use big picture mode).For me my controller layout wasnt popping up, so if this is occuring left click on (In steam) then clicking on the settings button(right side of steam, above screenshots) to the left of the star.You can also do this through big picture mode. right click (in steam)-manage-controller layout-edit layout-Template GAMEPAD-apply edit.Make sure you dont have open(task manager to make sure)!!
